Itinerary
Day 1 – Muscat
Arrive in Muscat, Oman, where you are met and transferred to your hotel, the Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel or similar.
Stay at Al Falaj Hotel Muscat (or a similar hotel).
Day 2 – Muscat
Explore some of the city’s highlights, including the Grand Mosque, the Bait Al Zubair Museum, and the historic souk in Muttrah. Then, head to Old Muscat to view the 16th-century Al-Mirani and Al-Jelani forts from the outside. Modesty is mandatory for everyone visiting the Grand Mosque. Men must wear long pants, and shirts must cover their shoulders. Women must be fully covered, including their heads, full arms, and full legs. We recommend not wearing jewelry unless it is fully covered by clothing. Proper Omani outfits for men and women can be rented if desired.
In the morning, visit the Grand Mosque, one of Muscat’s finest architectural sites. This mosque covers an area of 416,000 square meters and can accommodate 20,000 worshippers.
Visit the Bait al Zubair Museum, which boasts one of the largest heritage art collections in Oman, to learn more about Omani culture and history.
Take in the colorful sights and perfumed scents of this winding marketplace. Hunt for authentic Omani artifacts and handicrafts or sip aromatic Omani coffee and gaze out at the local hustle and bustle.
Explore Old Muscat and view the forts of Al-Mirani and Al-Jelani from the outside to get some perspective on Omani history.
Stay at Al Falaj Hotel Muscat (or a similar hotel) and enjoy breakfast and lunch.
Day 3 – Muscat/Ras al-Jinz
Leave Muscat and drive along the coast towards the picturesque Bimmah Sinkhole. Continue to Sur, renowned in the past for its dhow shipyards, before reaching Ras al-Jinz on the coast. After an early dinner, visit the turtle sanctuary, where green turtles come from thousands of kilometers away to lay eggs at night.
Travel by 4×4 from Muscat to Ras al-Jinz in 2 hours and 27 minutes, covering 246 kilometers.
Feast your eyes on one of the world’s most breathtaking sinkholes surrounded by the sea and towering mountains. This sinkhole measures 40 meters wide and 20 meters deep, and its glittering turquoise waters are said to have been created by a falling star. Jump in and cool off.
Visit the Sur shipyard, the last remaining factory that builds Oman’s traditional dhows. Learn how these wooden boats have a 6,000-year-old history that has established ancient Oman as a prosperous trading port in the region.
Visit the Ras al-Jinz turtle sanctuary, the nesting home of the endangered green turtle (Cheloniamydas). Follow a guide out to the beach and witness the nesting process of these creatures from a safe distance. Observe the turtles digging and covering their nests in the sand and learn about the center’s conservation efforts in the area.
Stay at Hotel Sur Plaza (or a similar hotel) and enjoy breakfast.
Day 4 – Ras al-Jinz/Wahiba Sands
Drive towards Wādī Banī Khālid, a rocky oasis nestled in the East Hajar mountains filled with natural pools. Later, begin your desert adventure through the dunes towards the desert camp, just in time for a sunset, then enjoy a traditional dinner.
Experience the Omani Desert Lodge Camp, where you will overnight in comfortable tents with beds and private bathrooms, but there is no A/C in the tents.
Drive through red rock formations and vibrant green plantations and take in the natural beauty of this oasis-like region. Running through this area are the natural blue-tinted springs that receive a constant water flow throughout the year, making it a lifeline for villages of this area. Enjoy lunch before taking free time to explore the area. Opt to take an easy hike to the surrounding waterfalls or swim in the wadis (natural springs).
Arrive at the desert camp just in time to enjoy the sunset. Enjoy a traditional meal at the camp restaurant and then spend the evening sitting under the stars, surrounded by the golden dunes of Wahiba Sands.
Optional Activities
Hiking and Swimming in Wādī Banī Khālid
Explore this rocky region on foot, discovering turquoise-colored natural pools and picturesque waterfalls along the way. Jump in and cool off.
Stay at Desert Safari Camp (or a similar camp) and enjoy breakfast and dinner.
Day 5 – Wahiba Sands/Nizwá
Leave the desert behind and head towards Ibra to visit the impressive Jabrin castle. Continue towards Nizwá, stopping at the historic fortress of Bahla along the way.
Visit Jabrin Castle, one of Oman’s most impressive castles, built in the 17th century and featuring intricate carvings and beautiful frescoes.
Stop at the historic Bahla Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Oman’s oldest fortresses, dating back to the pre-Islamic era.
Stay at Golden Tulip Nizwa Hotel (or a similar hotel) and enjoy breakfast.
Day 6 – Nizwá/Jebel Shams
Explore Nizwá, famous for its traditional souk and the impressive Nizwá Fort. Later, drive up to Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain, and marvel at the stunning views from the “Grand Canyon of Oman.”
Visit Nizwá Fort, one of Oman’s most iconic landmarks, built in the 17th century. Explore the fort’s many rooms, courtyards, and towers, and learn about the fort’s history and significance. Afterward, head to the souk, where you can browse for local handicrafts, spices, and silverware.
Drive up to Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the “Grand Canyon of Oman.” Take a short hike to the edge of the canyon for even more impressive views.
Stay at Jebel Shams Resort (or a similar hotel) and enjoy breakfast.
Day 7 – Jebel Shams/Muscat
Drive back to Muscat and visit the beautiful Wadi Al Arbeieen, a picturesque valley with crystal-clear waters and lush greenery. Later, return to Muscat and enjoy a farewell dinner. Visit Wadi Al Arbeieen, a beautiful valley with crystal-clear waters and lush greenery. Take a dip in the refreshing waters or simply enjoy the stunning scenery.
Enjoy a farewell dinner in Muscat before departing the next day.
